Earth Day, which originally took place on April 22, 1970, is often marked as the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Born out of the 1960s counter-culture, that first Earth Day brought together more than 20 million Americans calling for increased attention and regulation to protect our environment. Within a year, the U.S. Government created the Environmental Protection Agency and passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act.

Each year since, the movement has grown. It became an international event in 1990, took on global warming in 2000, and launched “A Billion Acts of Green” in 2010. Today, Earth Day isn’t just for the hippies and the flower power generation; citizens, companies and governments alike have joined the cause, making Earth Day the largest secular observance in the world.

Here at CNSI, we are globally minded and locally committed. Therefore, we are proud to join the millions of individuals across the world on Earth Day by making commitments to increase our environmentally friendly practices. And it begins today with reducing paper waste. This morning, each one of our corporate office employees received a CNSI mug and water bottle, which can be reused for beverages. Since just one disposable paper cup every day leads to 23 pounds of waste per year, this is our contribution to fighting excess waste.

Later today, we will provide CNSI staff with garden seeds and a chance to win environmentally friendly items, including herb gardens and reusable grocery bags. To complete our celebration, CNSI will be making a donation to the Arbor Day Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to planting and sustaining trees. As a company who serves clients all over the United States, travel is a core part to our business. Contributing to the planting and sustainability of trees is one way to offset our carbon footprint.

Our Earth Day efforts add to the long-term environmental initiatives that are part of iCare, CNSI’s corporate social responsibility program. We are committed to making “Every Day Earth Day” and strive to constantly to improve recycling and waste reduction, carbon neutrality, and energy efficiency.

How else should we be celebrating Earth Day? Has your office made an environmentally sustainable change that you think we should follow? Let us know by finding us on Twitter @CNSICorp.
