The federally mandated HIPAA-AS (Administrative Simplification) standard covered electronic transactions and code sets have recently changed. On January 16, 2009, the DHHS announced the final rules for electronic transactions (version HIPAA 5010) and new code set standards (ICD-10-CM). HIPAA compliance just went in to effect on January 1, 2012 for the updated electronic transactions while the new ICD-10 code set standards must be implemented by October 1, 2013.
